A K9 with the San Jacinto Police Department was shot and killed Wednesday during a search for a wanted felon near Hemet.

Officers received a call around 2:30 p.m. involving the search for an armed suspect in the area of Mayberry Avenue and San Jacinto Street in the county area of Hemet, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Albert Martinez.

The SWAT team responded to the call, Martinez said.

During one of their searches, 3-year-old "Sultan," was shot by the suspect, according to Martinez. Sultan later died of his injuries.

The suspect was still believed to be barricaded in a home nearby.

Just before 10 p.m. a flash-bang grenade was heard outside the house.

Authorities had not revealed the name of the suspect or the reason he was being sought.
