A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of killing a man and woman who were found dead in their Hemet home the night before, officials said.

Quintin McCracken, 41, is the son of one of the victims found dead in their residence on the 5000 block of Corte Cerro, Hemet police said in a news release.

Police have not released the victims’ names, but said they were a man in his 70s and woman in her 60s. They have described the pair as a couple.

Authorities also have not revealed the victims’ manner of death, or released any information on what sort of scene they found around 10:45 p.m. Monday. They were originally called to the home to perform a welfare check.

McCracken was located in San Bernardino in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said.

Investigators interviewed him and subsequently arrested him on suspicion of murder. They say they’ve already requested prosecutors charge him with two counts of murder.

McCracken was released from federal prison last September after serving 13 years for bank robbery, police said

Inmate records show he was being held Wednesday night in Riverside County jail. No information on bail was available.

Flash flood warnings issued, including in Apple Fire burn area, as summer thunderstorm hits parts of SoCal

Flash flood warnings were issued in parts of the Southland Tuesday afternoon, including for the Apple Fire burn scar area, as a thunderstorm moved through the region during an intense heat wave.

The first thunderstorm formed near Big Bear Lake around noon, according to the National Weather Service.

“Activity will continue to pick up over the next few hours in the mountains, and should gradually drift toward the Inland Empire later today,” the weather service tweeted.

The system moved into other parts of San Bernardino County, including Joshua Tree, where lightning sparked “numerous” vegetation fires, according to the county’s Fire Department. The largest blaze grew to about 150 acres before forward progress was halted.

In Los Angeles County, showers and isolated thunderstorms were initially detected in parts of the Antelope Valley shortly after 1 p.m. About an hour later, a thunderstorm began developing in the area, with activity reported “between Big Pines, Lake Los Angeles, Acton, and Palmdale,” according to NWS.

Around 3:45 p.m., additional storms formed east of the 5 Freeway near where the Lake Fire was burning in the Angeles National Forest, as well as in parts of northwest Ventura County.

A “strong” thunderstorm near Mount Pinos and south of Pine Mountain Club prompted NWS to issue a significant weather advisory late in the afternoon.

Forecasters warned the storms could bring dangerous lightning, gusty winds, brief intervals of heavy rain and even hail to the area.

Flash flood warnings have gone into effect in areas throughout Southern California, including for Oak Glen and Cherry Valley, potentially putting recent burn scarred areas from the recent Apple Fire at risk through late into the afternoon.

“Excessive rainfall over the burn scar will result in potentially deadly and destructive debris flows. The debris flow can consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials,” the weather service said.

The Apple Fire, which broke out on July 31, has burned about 52 square miles and is almost fully contained.

Hemet, San Jacinto, Valley Vista, Running Springs, Arrowbear Lake And Green Valley were among the areas under flash flood warnings during the afternoon.

Anyone who encounters flooding should immediately move to higher ground and avoid driving through floodwaters, forecasters advised.

Meanwhile, an excessive heat warning was in place throughout the region amid searing, triple-digit temperatures.

By 12:45 p.m., the heat index had already reached 119 degrees in Palm Springs, 111 degrees in Riverside and 109 degrees in Santa Ana, according to the weather service.

In San Diego County, the heat index values along the Interstate-15 corridor eclipsed 115 degrees by early afternoon, thanks to the humidity.

“These are remarkable numbers for inland San Diego County – feeling just as hot as the Coachella Valley,” NWS tweeted.

Charges have been filed against a man and a woman accused of forcing three missing teen girls to perform sexual acts for the pair’s financial benefit, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

Mycal Brandon Ruff, 32, of Carson and Dezere Renee Romero, 31, of San Bernardino were both charged with three counts of human trafficking of a minor for a commercial sex act, a DA’s news release stated.

Romero was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, while Ruff’s arraignment date is Sept. 21.

They each face a possible maximum sentence of 17 years, four months in prison if convicted on the charges.

The pair, from San Bernardino, allegedly made the victims engage in commercial sex work for money, prosecutors said.

The victims — ages 15, 16, and 17 — had been reported missing from their hometowns of Long Beach, San Bernardino and Hemet, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The human trafficking investigation began Aug. 13, after detectives arranged to meet a minor being prostituted in Long Beach, a police news release stated.

Authorities said she agreed to let them search her phone, which uncovered two other juvenile victims and led to their rescue on Aug. 14 and 26, officials said.

The three girls told investigators that Ruff forced them into prostitution and that Romero helped manage them on the male suspect’s behalf, according to the release.

Ruff was arrested on Aug. 28, while Romero was apprehended on Sept. 3. Their booking photos have not been released.

The Police Department’s Vice Investigation Detail is continuing its investigation into the case.

The officer recognized Nunn as a suspect in a recent shooting and pulled up behind his vehicle, police said.

The driver fled immediately, kickstarting a pursuit.

"Nunn then began shooting a handgun at the pursuing officer as he sped westbound on Domenigoni Parkway toward Winchester Road in an area southwest of Hemet," police said in a news release.

The officer’s car was struck by gunfire, but the officer was not injured, according to authorities.

The pursuit then led into the unincorporated area of Winchester, where Nunn also shot at a California Highway Patrol officer who happened to be stopped on the side of the road, Hemet police said.

"Thankfully, the CHP officer was not injured, but at least one bullet hit the officer’s CHP patrol vehicle," police said.

Police said officers did not return fire.

The pursuit continued, with more police cruisers and an airship from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department converging on the scene.

"The suspect fired several more times at pursuing officers while traveling toward the area of Highway 74 and Juniper Flats Road, where he came to a stop," police said. "At that point, Nunn tossed his gun onto the dirt and surrendered without further incident."

Officers found a "distraught" woman in Nunn's car and detained her as well, but it was unclear what role she had played, police said.

Nunn could face two counts of attempted murder of peace officers, according to the department.

Tom Metzger, infamous white separatist and ex-grand dragon of California KKK, dead at 82

Tom Metzger, the notorious former Ku Klux Klan leader who rose to prominence in the 1980s while promoting white separatism and stoking racial violence, has died at age 82.

Riverside County Department of Public Health spokesman Jose Arballo Jr. said Metzger died Nov. 4 at a skilled nursing facility in Hemet. The cause was Parkinson's disease, Arballo said Thursday.

The former grand dragon of the California chapter of the Ku Klux Klan became one of racism's most prominent figures after he left that organization in the 1980s to form the White Aryan Resistance movement.

He eventually was pushed into the shadows and financial ruin, however, for his organization’s role in the 1988 beating death of Ethiopian college student Mulugeta Seraw in Portland, Oregon.

Seraw's family won a $12.5 million judgment against Metzger, his organization and others in 1990 following a trial in which a recording was played of Metzger praising the killers for performing what he called their “civic duty.”

Metzger lost his San Diego-area home, his television repair business and other assets. Although left penniless, Metzger continued to produce a racist newsletter for years and operated a racist hotline, taking calls personally.

He posted regularly on his organization's website until just a few months ago, according to a brief biography announcing his death on the website. Metzger’s death was first reported by the Times of San Diego.

“Tom Metzger spent decades working against core American values as one of the most visible hardcore white supremacists in the country," Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt told The Associated Press. “Throughout his life, he engaged in a wide range of hateful activities from spreading anti-Semitic and racist rhetoric to launching vigilante border patrols as a California Klansman to recruiting skinheads to the white supremacist cause.”

The killing of Seraw left racial wounds in Portland that continue to this day, said Randy Blazak, a former sociology professor at Portland State University who has written extensively about hate groups.

“We became known as Skinhead City. We had racist skinheads and anti-racist skinheads doing battle in the streets, which is sort of a precursor of antifa and the Proud Boys,” he said, referencing those involved in recent violence that have gripped the city.

Born in Warsaw, Indiana, on April 9, 1938, Thomas Linton Metzger served in the Army from 1956 to 1959 before settling in California and a career as a TV repairman.

He joined the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in the mid-1970s, rising to the role of grand dragon of California before leaving to form the White Aryan Resistance in the early 1980s.

He ran for Congress from northern San Diego County in the early 1980s, winning the Democratic Party primary but losing by a landslide in the general election after Democrats and Republicans united against him.

He became a prominent media figure during those years, appearing on TV talk shows, organizing white supremacist demonstrations and cross burnings and promising a white civil war that would result in “blood in the streets.”

His son, John Metzger, and other white racists appeared on Geraldo Rivera's TV talk show in 1988 and brawled with Roy Innis and other Black civil rights activists. Rivera suffered a broken nose during the televised mayhem, which created a national furor.

Tom Metzger's downfall began after he sent one of his White Aryan Resistance members to Oregon to organize a local Nazi skinhead group. Within a month, local skinheads had beaten to death the 28-year-old Seraw with a baseball bat. They later admitted they singled him out because he was Black.

The civil judgment stemming from the killing was devastating for Metzger, said Elden Rosenthal, one of the attorneys who represented the Seraw family.

“We chased him for 20 years. We collected money from him for 20 years, which is the limit under Oregon law," Rosenthal said. “The goal of the case was to put him out of business and to impact his standing in the white supremacy movement — and we thought we accomplished both of those things.”

Another attorney, James McElroy of San Diego, arranged the sale of Metzger's house to a Latino family to help satisfy the judgment.

“Poetic justice,” said McElroy, who went on to adopt Seraw's son, who was 7 when his father was killed. The boy is now in his mid-30s, is married and works as a pilot for a major airline, the attorney said.

Although Metzger has long been identified as a white supremacist, he actually shunned that term, saying he was a white separatist and didn't have a problem with Blacks who did not interact with whites.

Still, the racial hatred he fomented continues to this day, McElroy and Rosenthal said.

“At the time, I looked at him as totally on the fringe,” Rosenthal said. “What we have unfortunately learned over the last 30 years is that there’s a whole lot of people who share his views. … At the time it seemed fringy, now it seems a bit frightening.”

A police officer is expected to be OK after being shot while responding to an initial shots fired call in Hemet Monday morning.

Robert Moran is seen in an image provided by the Hemet Police Department on Nov. 23, 2020.

The incident began shortly after 4 a.m. when someone reported gunfire in the 3400 block of West Florida Avenue.

Two officers arrived at the scene and contacted the witness who made the call, the Hemet Police Department stated in a news release.

One of the officers searched the area for evidence while the other spoke with the caller in a parking lot.

About 4:19 a.m., a car was traveling through the parking lot as the witness pointed to it and said, “That looks like him.”

At least one gunshot was then fired from the vehicle, striking the officer in the leg.

The wounded officer did not return fire but the suspect’s vehicle was stopped by police as it attempted to flee from the parking lot.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Robert Moran of Hemet, was taken into custody without incident.

A handgun was located on the front passenger seat of the vehicle, the Police Department stated.

No officers fired their weapons during the incident.

Moran was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. He is being held on $1 million bail.

The unidentified officer was taken to an area hospital with what was described as a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the knee.

One person was arrested in a suspected DUI crash that left two people dead and another injured in Hemet early Saturday morning, police said.

A 21-year-old woman and her passenger were killed when 33-year-old Jesus Rios, of Downey, slammed his BMW into their Honda shortly before 4 a.m. on Florida Avenue near Kirby Street, the Hemet Police Department said in a news release.

A third person who was in the Honda was seriously injured but is expected to survive.

Investigators believe the Honda was stopped on Florida Avenue facing east for a red traffic signal when Rios continued driving on Florida without braking, and he rear-ended the Honda, police said.

Rios, who was not injured in the collision, allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot, "but a witness prevented his escape," police said.

Officers arrived at the scene and arrested Rios on suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular
homicide, and attempted hit-and-run.

Video from the scene showed a badly damaged Honda with its back crushed into the back seats. Nearby, a white BMW is seen stopped on the sidewalk with its front hood damaged and its windshield shattered.

Paramedics were pulling people out of the badly mangled Honda and transporting at least one young woman in an ambulance, video showed.

The names of those killed in the crash are not being released, pending notification of family members, police said.

Florida Avenue was closed in both directions from Gilmore Street to Sanderson Avenue for hours as investigators probed the scene.

Authorities have released the names of two women who died in a Hemet crash that led to the arrest of a DUI suspect over the weekend.

The Riverside County coroner identified Dane Adkins-Radford and Emily Hale, both 21-year-old residents of Hemet, as victims of the crash that happened around 4 a.m. Saturday near Florida Avenue and Kirby Street.

According to the Hemet Police Department, a Honda Fit hatchback with three people inside was stopped at a red light when a BMW 535i sedan rear-ended it without braking.

Video from the crash site showed the Honda with the back crushed into the backseats. A BMW nearby was stopped on the sidewalk, its front hood damaged and windshield shattered.

The driver and one of the passengers in the Honda died, and the other passenger was seriously hurt.

The county coroner said Adkins-Radford died at the scene while Hale was pronounced dead at Riverside University Health System Medical Center. Authorities did not disclose which one of them was driving.

The man behind the wheel of the BMW, identified as 33-year-old Jesus Rios of Downey, did not sustain any injuries.

Rios tried to leave the scene but "a witness prevented his escape," police said. Officers later arrested him on suspicion of DUI, vehicular homicide and attempted hit-and-run.

Rios remained in jail Monday on $1 million bail, county inmate records show. His court date was set for Wednesday.

Meanwhile, family members have set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses for Adkins-Radford and Hale, as well as for medical expenses for the surviving victim. The page identified her as Alyssa, who "broke several bones in her right arm and right leg and has fractures in her hip and left leg."

A message on the website said Adkins-Radford and Hale "leave behind hurting families, friends, and coworkers who loved them soo much. These girls had their whole lives ahead of them. We will miss their laughs, their silly dances and their loving personalities."

Hemet officials asked for the public's help Monday in their investigation into the stabbing death of a man whose body was found near a bar where a fight had occurred 40 minutes earlier.

It's unclear if the victim, only identified as a 31-year-old man, was involved in the altercation, according to the Hemet Police Department.

Officers found his body with "traumatic injuries" after they were flagged down near the intersection of Florida Avenue and Carmalita Street at about 1 a.m., the Police Department said. The man had been stabbed to death, Lt. Nathan Miller told KTLA.

"Investigators learned that a fight, involving several patrons, had taken place outside of a nearby bar," according to a department statement. "The man’s lifeless body was discovered about 40 minutes after the fight."

Police did not provide further information about the operations at the bar, which, under a regional stay-at-home order, can't serve customers onsite.

Authorities shut down the eastbound lanes of Florida Avenue between Harvard and Juanita streets as detectives assessed the scene.

The Police Department asked anyone with dashcam or any other video from the intersection between 12:15 a.m. and 1 a.m. to contact Investigator Doug Klinzing at 951 765-2400 or dklinzing@cityofhemet.org. Detectives are accepting footage and tips anonymously, the department said.

Police are searching for a man they say drove a stolen pickup through a fence and onto a Southern California highway in the wrong direction, where he and a passenger leaped from the moving vehicle and allowed it to roll until it struck an oncoming van.

The driver of the van, a 55-year-old woman, was hospitalized with major injuries following the crash early Thursday on Interstate 215 in Menifee, California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig said.

“The driver had her seat belt on. That had a lot to do with saving her life,” Lassig told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The Dodge Ram pickup was initially pursued by Hemet police when the driver turned off the headlights, bounced over a dirt shoulder and crashed through a barb-wire fence and onto the freeway's northbound lanes traveling south, Lassig said.

Police stopped pursuing and the driver slowed the pickup while he and the passenger bailed out. They ran across the northbound and southbound lanes and into a field, Lassig said.

The collision between the rolling pickup and the van scattered debris all over the highway east of Los Angeles, the newspaper said.

The passenger in the pickup was caught but police are still searching for the driver, Lassig said.

Hemet police were searching for the driver of a sedan that struck and killed a woman early Sunday, officials said.

The driver fled the scene after hitting the woman, who is believed to be a Hemet resident in her mid to late 30s, according to the city's police department. Officers responded to the crash along Sanderson Avenue near Fruitvale Avenue at about 3:17 a.m.

They found the victim and performed CPR but were unable to revive her, police said. She died from her injuries at a nearby hospital.

Police said her identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

Investigators believe the woman was either crossing or standing in the southbound lanes of Sanderson when the vehicle hit her. Police described the suspect vehicle as a brown or tan sedan.

Officials are hoping to learn more details after following up on other leads. Police said detectives are currently obtaining surveillance video from a nearby gas station.

According to police, officers responded to a call about a female jumping into traffic along Kirby Street -- about one block east of the scene -- just 30 minutes before the fatal crash.

"The caller reported they almost struck the female after she jumped or ran into the roadway," Hemet Police Sgt. Dan Reinbolt wrote in a news release from the department.

But when officers arrived, they couldn't find the person. However, police now believe the woman struck and killed in the hit-and-run is the same person who jumped into the roadway earlier.

No other details have been released as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information, or anyone who may have witnessed the collision, is urged by authorities to reach the Hemet Police Department at 951-765-2400.
